By-Passed by most people on the way to Cortina, Hakuba Norikura (Hakunori) is a bit of a haven for those looking to get away from the crowds and try out an old school Japanese Ski Resort.

Snow quality is similar to Cortina, but the resort has not gone after the international market the same way that Cortina has in opening up tree runs, but there is still plenty of fun to be had.

On a powder day, the wide open Sky View Run accessed from the Alps #10 pair lift is fantastic until it gets chopped up.

Unlike other Hakuba resorts, Norikura spreads vertically across the mountain, so while runs are on the whole, it is a resort where you can ski all day without getting too exhausted.

While there is a combined ticket with Cortina, in most cases it is not worth the extra 1,500yen or so. A better option is to make 2 trips up here, and spend a day at each resort.

The Alps Hotel at the base of the Wakaguri area operates the resort. The hotel has a great spa, and a family friendly small swimming pool, so pack the swim suit.

The buses heading to Cortina all stop at Norikura, so join the crowds at Happo Information Center.

Hakuba Norikura also has some great back country skiing, but as with all off piste areas, proper equipment, experience, and a guide is the only safe way to go.
